Can we test this idea? If heat does increase the motion of the particles we might expect hot materials to diffuse more quickly than cold ones. The following experiment might provide an answer to this problem. 8. Into each of two test tubes pour some warm gelatin solution. Follow the directions on the packet to make up this gelatin. The tubes should be about half full of the solution. Stand them upright until the jelly has set. Make up a coloured solution by dissolving some potassium dichromate in water and adding potassium hydroxide until the solution turns yellow.

7. Place a piece of glass tubing in the copper nitrate solution. Put your finger over the end of the tubing. By keeping your finger on the end of the tubing, remove some of the solution and gently place the tube, with its solution, in a test tube of water. Take your finger away to let the liquid run out of the tubing underneath the water. Leave the glass tube resting on the bottom of the test tube, because you must not disturb the water. If you have done this very carefully you should have a blue layer underneath the clear water.

Diffusion of liquids. Do liquids diffuse? This is an obvious question to ask seeing that we are interested in this state of matter as well as in gases. In our study of diffusion of gases, we made some brown nitrogen dioxide by adding nitric acid to copper. You no doubt noticed the blue liquid which remained in the bottom of the beaker. This is copper nitrate dissolved in water. We can use this copper nitrate solution to find out if liquids diffuse. 7. Place a piece of glass tubing in the copper nitrate solution.
