Make up a coloured solution by dissolving some potassium dichromate in water and adding potassium hydroxide until the solution turns yellow.

By keeping your finger on the end of the tubing, remove some of the solution and gently place the tube, with its solution, in a test tube of water. Take your finger away to let the liquid run out of the tubing underneath the water. Leave the glass tube resting on the bottom of the test tube, because you must not disturb the water. If you have done this very carefully you should have a blue layer underneath the clear water.
Diffusion of liquids. Do liquids diffuse? This is an obvious question to ask seeing that we are interested in this state of matter as well as in gases. In our study of diffusion of gases, we made some brown nitrogen dioxide by adding nitric acid to copper. You no doubt noticed the blue liquid which remained in the bottom of the beaker.
