At Abstract. This paper presents a way to eﬃciently use lane detection techniques - known from driver assistance systems - to assist in obstacle detection for autonomous trains. On the one hand, there are several properties that can be exploited to improve conventional lane detection algorithms when used for railway applications. The heavily changing visual appearance of the tracks is compensated by very eﬀective geometric constraints. On the other hand there are additional challenges that are less problematic in classical lane detection applications.
The experimental results of the classifiers for different features have been tested on training and testing data from the 16 autistic and 22 normal contours. It can be observed that Bezier coefficients modeled by principle component analysis (PCA) outperform the CC control points. It can also be shown that the reconstructed curve has lost discriminatory information when compared to Bezier coefficients as shown in Fig. 5. From Fig. 6 it is clear that the Fourier descriptor of the Bezier coefficients and the reconstructed curve points modeled by principle component analysis (PCA) outperform the Fourier descriptor CC control points.
